Eight days that move through four distinct worlds: the chaotic, delicious energy of Medan; the ancient rainforest of Gunung Leuser where orangutans live wild; the volcanic highlands of Berastagi; and the vast, caldera-blue waters of Lake Toba — the largest volcanic lake on Earth.
Lake Toba is the emotional peak. The Batak people who live on Samosir Island in the centre of the lake have one of the most distinctive cultures in Southeast Asia — a Christian minority in Muslim-majority Indonesia, with intricate weaving traditions, clan totems carved into every roofline, and a musical heritage of gondang drums and gondang sabangunan.
The pace is unhurried. Days in Bukit Lawang move to jungle time. Days at Toba move to lake time. This is the trip you'll describe to friends for years.
