Beyond the food, you'll discover the city's colonial architecture — the Maimun Palace, the grand mosque, and the stately Tjong A Fie Mansion, whose Hakka Chinese owner became one of Sumatra's most powerful men. A day trip to Berastagi brings you to the cool highland air, colourful fruit markets, and volcanic panoramas of Mount Sibayak.
